Dr. Karen Tobias has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Society for Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery. Dr. Tobias has also been appointed to the Board of Regents and Examining Committee for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). Download this image for print (114 K)

(Knoxville, Tenn.) — Dr. Karen Tobias, a professor of surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Society for Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery. The society is comprised of veterinary surgeons interested in advancing their skills and their profession.

"The members are dynamic, intelligent, thoughtful, outspoken, and forward thinking, and they are leaders in the profession," said Tobias. "The colleges and referral centers from which they originate will automatically be associated with those qualities."

Dr. Tobias has also been appointed to the Board of Regents and Examining Committee for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). As a member of the board, Dr. Tobias will have a chance to help fashion the future of veterinary medicine and, in particular, the art and science of surgery.

"One of our primary goals will be to educate practitioners and pet owners on our specialty. It's commonplace now for people to seek out physician specialists — dermatologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, and surgeons — for their own health care needs. They do this because they want the best possible care for themselves. And most pet owners and caregivers would like the same standard of care for their pets, but they may not know that veterinary specialists are available to meet the needs of the four legged or winged members of their family."

Dr. Tobias will serve a three-year term on the ACVS board.

After receiving undergraduate degrees from Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois, Dr. Tobias earned her Degree of Veterinary Medicine from the UL College of Veterinary Medicine followed by an MS from the Ohio State University. She has been with the UT College of Veterinary Medicine since 1999. Her research interest is primarily portosystemic shunts in dogs, a sometimes fatal birth defect in which a blood vessel carries blood around the liver instead of through it.
