Field Day To Highlight Waste and Nutrient Management Techniques    


(LEWISBURG, Tenn.) – Practical solutions to complying with state and federal regulations about managing dairy waste and animal nutrients will be discussed Thursday, October 23, at the University of Tennessee Dairy Experiment Station Field Day.

Field day sessions will include discussions of concentrated animal feeding operation regulations (CAFOs), how to manage dairy rations to reduce the phosphorus content of manure, and techniques for handling sand-laden manure. Also, the station’s solids separation process will be demonstrated.

Those attending the field day qualify for two hours of continuing education credit to maintain certification as a Tennessee CNMP (certified nutrient management program) Technical Service Provider. Please indicate your interest in receiving the credits when you register at the field day.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the station, and the first lecture will begin at 9:00. The field day is free and open to the public, but since lunch will be served on site to registered participants, pre-registration is recommended by October 9. The Dairy Experiment Station is one of 11 branch research units in the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station system. It is located south of Nashville near Lewisburg. If coming from the south, take exit 22 from I-65 and travel on U.S. Hwy 31A for approximately 8 miles. Turn on New Lake Road at the sign for the Dairy Experiment Station. If coming from north of the station, take exit 37 off I-65 onto Highway 50. Follow Highways 50 and then 431 toward Lewisburg, then turn south on U.S. Hwy 31A. Turn on New Lake Road at the sign for the Dairy Experiment Station.
