Light Up Your Holidays Safely

As you work to make your holidays special with bright lights and decorations, keep in mind that safe holidays are happy holidays.

Each year, hundreds of fires are caused by Christmas tree lights and other holiday decorations. Tim Prather, a safety specialist with the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service says, "When it comes to lights, safety means proper light selection and inspection."

Prather recommends the following tips to ensure safe lighting for this holiday season:

  • When purchasing lights, check the manufacturer's label to be sure the lights meet standards set by either the factory manual or Underwriters Laboratories.
  • Never use indoor lights or indoor extension cords outside your home.
  • Examine light strands each year. Check the wiring and sockets for cracks, breaks or exposed wires and replace strands with defects.
  • Unplug lights before replacing bulbs. Review original packaging to verify proper wattage and voltage.
  • Make sure trees do not touch power lines.
  • Securely fasten all outdoor lights, with the sockets pointed down to avoid moisture accumulation. When connecting outdoor light strands, seal moisture out of the connections with plastic and electrical tape.
  • Avoid overloading wall outlets and extension cords. Always unroll extension cords before use to prevent dangerous heat buildup from the electrical current.
  • Always turn holiday lights off before leaving home or going to sleep.
  • Be sure all smoke detectors are in good working order. If you don't have smoke detectors get some and install them.

Following Prather's tips will help you brighten your holiday season safely.
