Pick Tennessee Trees This Holiday Season Looking for a tree to decorate this holiday season? David Mercker, a forester with the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service, recommends choosing a locally grown tree. "Fresh Tennessee-grown Christmas trees are more likely to retain a healthy appearance and to endure the warm temperatures in our homes," Mercker said. "Plus by supporting local growers, consumers are contributing to responsible use of often erodible agricultural land," he said. Numerous tree farms are located across the state. Some allow the customer to choose and cut their own tree, while others offer live trees with balled roots that can be planted after the holiday season. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture features a Web site that lists the state's Christmas tree farms as well as a site with ideas for holiday gifts made in Tennessee. To visit the sites go online to http://www.picktnproducts.org. Mercker recommends that consumers call the tree farm in advance to check on its location and hours of operation as well as the availability of the desired type of tree. ### Contact: Gina Fincher, 974-7141
