Award Description . . .This award, presented in memory of Dean Emeritus William D. Bishop, recognizes a member of the field force of UT Extension who has contributed most to the attainment of the objectives of Extension. Jack Bishop, Dr. Bishop’s son, presented the award.
Citation . . .No one in this organization is a bigger believer in the Extension mission than Herb Lester. His career has been about helping people. Herb started working for us more than thirty years ago as a young agent in Cannon County. Over the years he also served as an agent in Georgia, then returned to Tennessee. He served as director of the Davidson County office, other supervisory roles, and was named Central Region Director in 1996 -- where he now is responsible for the programming in 31 counties.Herb is known for his excellent understanding of the Extension philosophy as it relates to program development and accountability. He has been involved in the implementation and growth of Master Gardener clubs, urban Extension programs, and his notable work with the Tennessee Young Farmers program with the Farm Bureau. We are lucky to have him as a resource. His experience benefits us all, as he often serves as a mentor to county directors and agents. He realizes the importance of good communication and new ideas. Herb is a reliable and wise leader, known for his solid, well-thought-out advice. But a good leader isn’t just a good talker. Herb is praised for his listening skills, and ability to understand the view of someone else. Herb is noted for his pride in Extension, and does a wonderful job of promoting the organization at many statewide functions. He has raised more than 200 thousand dollars in recent times through endowment campaigns and other drives to fund educational programs and events. In short, this man expects excellence from himself -- and that’s what he’s given us on a daily basis for many years. He is a visionary, extremely organized, a hard worker and dedicated to serving the people of Tennessee. As for the man himself, he is kind and unassuming, truly content to let others take the credit for something he’s done, and always quick with a warm hello and a smile.
